To conduct the research on selection of new varieties for good quality, disease resistance and high yield of fresh and processing tomato, cabbage, cucumber, sweet pepper, chinese cabbage, broccoli and potato; the economic characteristics and the corresponding breeding techniques; to study the genetics of haploid breeding by anther culture; embryo culture to produce hybrids between different species and genera and the mass propagation of vegetables and flowers for virus elimination and production.

To carry out the research of vegetable culture, storage and process concerning supply of vegetables all year round; to study the high yielding techniques of protected vegetable production, such as plastic mulch, plastic house and greenhouse production including soilless culture; to conduct the research on storage techniques of vegetables, the effect of pre-harvest factors on vegetable storage quality, transportation, circulation system and the techniques for fresh-keeping, processing and multiple utilization; to carry out research on vegetable development strategy.

To isolate, identify and preserve the pathogen; to do research on differentiation of races or strains of fungus, bacteria and virus; to conduct research of biological control of disease and pests of cucumber, tomato, sweet pepper, cabbage and chinese cabbage with stress on the integrated disease and pest management; to study the identification method by artificial inoculation during seedling stage in order to provide theoretical basis and techniques for breeding diseases-resistant varieties.

To develop new flower varieties and improve culture techniques; to introduce, select and mass propagate new varieties suitable for cut flowers, such as chinese rose, carnation, Transvaal Daisy; to introduce, select new variety and utilize the heterosis in annual and biennial herbaceous flowers.

To provide various research programs with experimental spaces of green house, plastic house and open field. At present, there is a glass greenhouse occupying 3 hectares, which can be used for experiments with high yield, high economic efficiency and low cost. In size greenhouses covering 1500 square meters and 2.3 hectares open field for experiments.

To collect and provide information services in vegetables and flowers and to edit periodicals. At present, there are 7,000 books in both chinese and foreign languages, 476 kinds of periodicals and 10,848 coppies of different information materials.
